Import

ProMIS provides a very fancy mechanism to import external data. These procedures might have some complexity and are hence subject of configuration. The advantage of this approach is that even complex situations can be handled without annoying the user with unnecessary requests or prompts. Furthermore adjustments to the procedure (e.g. due to new acquisition devices or software) can be made "in the background" so that the user will still act the same way he was used to.
Basically ProMIS accesses data in several ascii-formats as well as database and ODBC--data sources. A noteworthy feature is that the status of the data imported (e.g. ok, minor problems, missing data, inconsistencies, etc.) is available at one glimps, and in addition complemented by a reporting system which helps to detect and identify the actual problem.

Automatic import

Most desireable is the case, that the import runs more or less automatically, i.e. that the user does not have to make any decisions. If required this procedure can be ivoked also on a regular basis by the operation system.
However this needs some messaging routine to inform if some problems hav occured. This procedure is advisable if robust data acquisition devices with low error-probability are involved.

Standard import

In this case the user has some simple means to control the import procedure. The process is started on command by the user. This has the advantage that venetual problems are directly visible and immediate measures can be taken.
See example ion the right for illustration of the interface for this routine.

Import management

This options is generally used only in rare exception and allows the user several more options to control or check the import process.
